TIPS
  1. Since the technology is relatively new, the only way to enjoy 3D-enabled televisions is to connect it to a Blu-ray player that supports 3D content from disks.
  2. Depending on the manufacturer, there may be a set of 3D goggles included with the TV set. However, some manufacturers do sell the goggles separately.
  3. While most 3D-capable TVs have active-shutter goggles, some models employ passive 3D technology and use simple 3D glasses.
  4. Finally, you can play games in full 3D, depending primarily on the game as well as the console being used.

Pros: Outstanding image quality, Ultra-slim and classy design, Built-in Wi-Fi, Includes 2 pairs of 3D active glasses
Cons: Remote is difficult to use, Too expensive, Glossy finish

Review: Designed with an exceptionally-thin brushed titanium bezel and a matching swivel stand, the Samsung D8000 series fuses beauty with function. Its price may be a little over the top, but it's probably due to the fact that it is poles apart from earlier and competing models. Aside from packing a solid feature set, it attracts attention with its almost frameless design that takes realism to new heights and at the same time, adds to the unit's already stunning aesthetics. This model renders amazing 3D visuals and offers Full HD 1080p content viewing. The Ultra Clear Panel not only reduces reflection from other light sources but also provides improved contrast and rich color. In comparison with most TV models, it has a web browser and more built-in apps. It also gives you wireless access to a large collection of movies, music, TV shows and other online content and even supports video calling through Skype. All the TV sizes in the D8000 series (46", 55", 60" and 65") are capable of converting 2D content to their best possible 3D quality and integrated with Micro Dimming Plus for optimized picture quality and Clear Motion Rate 960 technology which enables pristine rendering of fast-action scenes and dramatically improves response rates. Using its swivel stand, you can rotate the screen up to 10 degrees and experience maximum viewing comfort. Also included with the purchase are two pairs of 3D Active Glasses. Connectivity isn't a problem as the unit comes with four HDMI inputs, three USB 2.0 ports, a PC input, 2 Composite inputs, a Component input and an Ethernet port, if you want a wired connection. You can even hook up compatible devices like cameras and camcorders and view digital content in the big screen, courtesy of AllShare and ConnectShare Movie. In terms of audio, there are two built-in 10-watt bottom speakers with SRS TheaterSound technology which deliver sound with power and clarity. A PC audio input (mini-jack), a DVI audio input and an audio output (mini-jack) are also present as well as some extra features like a built-in HDTV Tuner, V-Chip which gives parents peace of mind and Anynet+ for controlling all compatible devices without the clutter of too many controllers. While the backlit QWERTY Remote is a nice upgrade to the standard clickers, it is one of the few things in this TV that needs to be improved upon. It has a nice design but it is not easy to use, so purchasing a universal remote control is probably better. For the price, it is also quite disappointing that Samsung didn't skip the glossy finish, which is nice to look at, but in turn, makes the screen reflective. Nonetheless, Samsung has another strong contender in its lineup. The D8000 combines state-of-the-art technology with simple operation and it delivers outstanding image quality which can be considered superior across the board.

  • Panasonic Viera TC-P60ST50 60\

Pros: FULL HD 3D, Realistic colors and deep black levels, Backlit remote with help key, Thin bezel with transparent edges
Cons: Few HDMI inputs, No 3D glasses included, No THX mode, Glossy remote

Review: For the grandest display, a large TV that features FULL HD 3D and faithful color reproduction, just like Panasonic's ST50 series, is a must. The TV ranges from 50-65 inch, and is beautiful inside and out, with great picture and a thin bezel, accented with transparent, angled edges. Take your mind to places of pure imagination and stunning depth with the ST50's active 3D technology. Deeper blacks are achieved through Infinite Black Pro and the 2,500 Focused Field Drive offers ultimate sharpness when viewing high speed-action. Eight dome-type microspeakers and a slim subwoofer also produce balanced sound. The ST50 can be manipulated via VIERA's remote App. Support for gamepad operation and VieraLink are also provided. A backlit remote with a help key that acts as an on-screen user manual guides you every step of the way and provides a traditional way to control your TV at a great distance. Fingerprints show up easily on its glossy surface, though. There is noticeable glare too, in the TV itself, during daytime viewing, and it uses bluetooth-enabled 3D glasses which cost twice as high as standard 3D glasses. Two rear USB ports and an SD card slot allow your TV to turn into a complete media hub, but since 4 HDMI inputs are a standard in new TVs, it's surprising that Panasonic only included 3 in the ST50. The ST50 has a web-browser which lets you do more than just watch. You can unleash your TV's limitless potential through VIERA Connect, which opens the door to various internet services like YouTube and HuluPlus for video, Pandora and SHOUTcast radio for music, Fox sports and MLB.TV for sports, and a lot more. There's also a plan of adding disney digital books, chuggington and other kid-friendly content in the near future, so that your kids can also learn and enjoy. The TV's built-in Wi-Fi maximizes convenience while giving your whole set-up an uncluttered look. There's no THX mode available on the Panasonic ST50 series, but a game mode is featured for the benefit of hardcore gamers who expect blur-free gaming, as well as an Eco-mode which automatically controls the brightness and turns off the TV after 3 hours of inactivity or 10 minutes of no signal.

Pros: Superior picture quality, Lead-free display, Includes a swivel stand and a Wi-Fi adapter
Cons: 3D Glasses are not included, Bottom speakers make the unit slightly thicker, Glossy bezel, Clicker has no dedicated Netflix button

Review: Although more expensive and thicker than the ST30, the Panasonic GT30 is a perfect match for those who wants a grand view of their movies and other media content. It doesn't cost nearly as much as buying a high-end TV; in spite of which, it makes ghosting and low-quality video output a thing of the past. It boasts a full HD 1080p resolution and a frame rate of up to 120 frames per second. The lead and mercury-free display not only ensures dazzling picture quality, it also offers lower power consumption and a longer panel life of up to 100,000 hours. As mentioned, it is chunkier than the earlier series so those who didn't want the overall size of the ST30 would not be impressed by the GT30, as it measures 2.2 inches deep due to the addition of bottom speakers which can't be detached. The glossy bezel also makes it a bit of a dust-magnet and there are no 3D glasses included with the package so you need to shell out a bit in order to get hold of the 3D feature. On the other hand, the supplied stand is capable of swiveling, providing more flexibility than the standard ones. The Infinite Black 2 technology offers incredible contrast and deep blacks even in bright environments and the 600Hz Subfield drive enables you to view fast action scenes at full speed. 2D-3D Conversion can also be considered top notch as it produces the best possible output and plays crystal clear images. Thanks to Viera Link, you can de-clutter your desk and control all compatible devices like cameras, camcorders, Blu-Ray players and home theater system using the same remote control. The clicker doesn't have a dedicated Netflix button like other models but still, it is easy to use and comfortable in the hand. The GT30 lets you experience a wireless, convenient connection with the inclusion of a Wi-Fi dongle. It is worth mentioning that most TVs in the same price range don't usually come with one. Through Viera Connect, you can get updates from Facebook or Twitter, video call or chat with your friends on Skype and enjoy interactive and engaging content from a great number of providers including YouTube, HuluPlus, CinemaNow, Amazon Video, Netflix, NBA, MLB, NHL and NFL. The ST30 is a great TV with ample features and the same could be said about the GT30. It is neither the slimmest nor the classiest model available today but the solid picture quality and great feature set make it worth the extra money. It even has a 3D Image Viewer which enables you to insert your SD card into the dedicated slot and view your photos directly from your TV.

Pros: Excellent design combined with state of the art features, 3D capable, Advanced connection options
Cons: Minor edge backlight bleeding, Keypad is a little hard to use

Review: Aside from the high definition LED screen, 3D capability and next-generation connectivity to both the Internet and to other devices, probably the greatest thing about the Samsung D7000 LED TV is how nice it looks. This unit has apparently the thinnest bezel we have seen in a flat-panel screen, topping out at .2 inches. Being less than half an inch all around, it contributes to the illusion that the already-large screen is bigger than it actually is. The ultra-slim profile at 1.2" without the stand makes mounting this unit onto a wall a nice option and the metallic color gives a sleek and modern design element. It goes without saying, of course, that this HDTV is more than just plain good looks. A maximum resolution of 1920 X 1080 pixels combined with the Auto Motion Plus technology that displays images at 240Hz makes every image, whether static or dynamic, leap off the screen without any noticeable blurring, even with high-speed images like sports or action scenes. The Ultra Clear Panel making up the entirety of the screen also improves the overall image quality by absorbing ambient light instead of reflecting it. Using separate 3D glasses, a 3D-capable Blu-ray player or other 3D media brings you to a whole new dimension of visuals that must be experienced to be fully enjoyed. Connecting devices to this unit is seamless, with 4 HDMI ports, one composite and one component video input and one VGA port for connecting a PC being joined by three USB ports. You can also hook up a speaker system with its Digital Audio interface and get improved audio quality beyond what the onboard speakers can deliver. When it comes to networking, the D7000 boasts both an onboard wireless 802.11N interface as well as an RJ-45 port for Ethernet. The Samsung Apps Suite makes full use of these connections, delivering additional content both free and paid (depending on the publisher) straight from the World Wide Web. The remote control supplied with the TV has an integrated QWERTY keypad for input use. Networking the D7000 to other devices like PCs, Network-attached storage devices or game consoles is also virtually effortless. With all its advantages, there are a few things consumers might want to consider before getting the Samsung D7000 LED TV. First, it tends to be a little oversaturated in terms of colors, especially when freshly unpacked. There is noticeable backlight bleeding when the image being displayed is a visually dark one, but thankfully, this goes away quickly as the unit warms up. The price, too, is a concern, especially if you are working within a budget. Lastly, the QWERTY keypad can be a little difficult to use if you are not used to typing on small devices like mobile phones. Nonetheless, this is an excellent choice for a flat-panel TV and the features it carries will be definitely worth your money.

Pros: Ultra-thin bezel, Remarkable picture quality, Full HD 1080p, Wi-Fi ready
Cons: Sound could be better, Wi-Fi adapter is not included

Review: Enjoy Full HD 1080p resolution with Sony's BRAVIA EX720 series of 3D LED TVs. Being 3D-ready, you can purchase optional 3D Active Glasses and take advantage of high quality conversion through the built-in 3D sync transmitter. The X-Reality engine combined with Sony’s Edge LED Backlight technology ensures sharp delineation along with superior contrast. It is also integrated with Sony’s Motionflow XR 240 technology that delivers high quality, fast-moving images and a built-in Light Sensor that allows the unit to adjust to various lighting conditions. With its Quick Start & Viewing feature, start-up time is noticeably faster even when compared to other Sony HDTVs. This LED TV is capable of streaming web content. It provides full access to sites like Netflix, Qriocity, Hulu Plus, YouTube and Pandora and even gives you the option to purchase Sony's UWA-BR100 Wi-Fi adapter for hassle-free connection. It doesn't come preloaded with Internet widgets but this can be easily fixed and solved by a software update which automatically installs the widgets to your TV. The menu permits easier navigation while the free media remote app allows you to use your smartphones like iPhone as a remote control for a comfortable and more convenient operation. It is also BRAVIA Sync Compatible which means that you can use the same clicker to control all your other devices. The HDMI cable minimizes cable clutter and the USB input lets you connect your thumb drive and USB-enabled devices. The only gripe is that it doesn't support all formats. Sound is also not the best but you can always pair it with a good set of speakers. The Sony EX720 looks sleek from edge-to-edge. It can be wall mounted or place on the desk using the solid, thin stand that matches the irresistibly beautiful, ultra-thin bezel. What separates it from other models in the same class are its built-in motion sensor which lets you save energy and money and its ability to take you to an entirely new level of home entertainment, regardless if its 2D or 3D.

Pros: Slim bezel, No ghosting, Solid 2D and 3D, Good built-in speakers, Integrated Wi-Fi
Cons: No web browser and QWERTY remote, 3D glasses must be bought separately

Review: At only 1" inch thin and 1.4" inch deep, Samsung's PND7000 series is a far cry from bulky TV sets and even to the new and already-thin models of the competition. If you have been eyeing the D8000, you will love the D7000 even more as it has a thinner bezel. Add to that the titan black finish, glass edges and the sturdy rectangular swivel stand with an acrylic neck, and you get a totally fashionable piece. As for picture quality, 2D and 3D viewing are both solid, thanks to its Full HD 1080p Resolution and 600Hz Subfield Motion which provides a no-blur viewing experience. The Real Black Filter even adjusts the settings automatically based on current lighting conditions for rich color and deep black levels. No active shutter glasses are included, though. In contrast with other Plasma TVs, the sound coming from the two 10-watt Down Firing Speakers is good and in fact, better than those in similarly-priced TV sets. It really saves valuable desk space as you won't need additional speakers. The built-in Wi-Fi also means that you won't need to buy an expensive USB Wi-Fi dongle. You have direct access to a variety of Internet services like Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube and Facebook and you can make all the content you want available right on your TV screen. However, unlike newer models, it doesn't have a web browser and text input can be a little slow without the QWERTY remote. Luckily, the included remote control has a great layout and the QWERTY remote can be purchased as an optional accessory. This Plasma TV can play media stored on your flash drives through the USB slot. Four HDMI inputs and an Ethernet port is likewise present in case you want to hook-up a lot of devices to your TV and if you want to go wired, instead of wireless. The Samsung PND7000 comes in 51-inch, 59-inch and 64-inch sizes, making it a good option for those who are on the hunt for the largest plasma TV that they can afford. The slim-line design of this unit is hard to resist, plus it is well-equipped with all the standard connections and additional features that you would expect from a high-end TV set.

Cons: Expensive, Doesn't include 3D goggles with basic package, image degradation at extreme angles, 3D has some flickering

Review: You're an owner of a home entertainment system looking to trade up to some new equipment, and you insist on having the best and the latest high definition technology to serve as the new centerpiece of your living room. Well, look no further than the Bravia HBR-X929 HDTV series, the newest flagship HDTVs from Sony. This Bravia line, made up of three different models (46", 55", and 65" screens,) gains its place at the top of the line through a combination of cutting-edge technology and a sense of elegant style. The X929 Bravias are definitely a thing of beauty, with its dark, featureless plane earning it the moniker of "Monolithic". The Conning Gorilla Glass screen that is lighter than conventional plate glass but much stronger, reaches up to the utmost edge of the bezel, which is, in turn, slightly set back and burnished with a handsome metallic sheen. The whole unit is only one and a half inches deep, and the included swivel stand only adds a couple more inches to that super slim profile when the X929s are mounted on it. However, the real magic happens once you switch on the unit and the screen jumps to life. Good looks are only half of what makes a great HDTV, and the Sony Bravia HBR-X929 series is no exception to that rule. The true advantage of the high-end Bravia X929s over similar models is easily obvious in its outstanding image quality, courtesy of Sony's X-Reality PRO Engine and Motionflow XR 960 image technologies. The entire expanse of the 1920X1080 native resolution on these big screens is likewise fitted with the Intelligent Peak LED Backlight which uses an array of LED lights that automatically adjusts between light and dark areas to provide excellent contrast to every image. Bravia X929s are fully 3D-compatible, giving you the ability to enjoy 3D content from your media players or game consoles when paired with Sony's Active Shutter 3D glasses. They have even enhanced the decoder systems to reduce the incidence of crosstalk or ghosting. The X929 series also retains the LightSensor technology that optimizes image quality according to lighting conditions. Sony's Bravia X929s are also on the forefront of merging television with the unlimited entertainment found on the web. Using your home's Internet connection plugged into the Bravia X929's wired or wireless network connection adapters, you can access available content through widgets included in the Bravia Internet video suite. Featured in the X929 series are a rather generous selection, including media streaming sites like Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Pandora, as well as widgets for social networks like Facebook and Twitter. With the addition of a required compact mic and camera unit, you can even call friends and family using Skype. Since the Sony Bravia HBR-X929 HDTV series is considered as a top product line, it should come as no surprise that it also commands a hefty price tag. Sad to say, there also seems to be some issues with off-axis viewing with the X929s, with extreme angles having the most image degradation. While 3D is quite reliable in terms of performance, there's some instances when the screen does flicker, and its 3D doesn't work too well when your head is tilted. Lastly, unless you're buying the more complete, but obviously more expensive bundled version of this model, there are no 3D goggles included with the package. However, when it comes down to performance, the Sony Bravia HBR-X929 series are definitely solid performers

Pros: Ultra-slim bezel, Amazing picture quality and 3D rendering, More apps
Cons: Expensive, No built-in Wi-Fi and Amazon Instant on its Smart Hub

Review: The Samsung 6400 Series lives up to its sky-high price with its phenomenal picture quality and 3D rendering, and of course, good looks. The grey finish and 1.2-inch thin bezel matched with the swivel stand and transparent brim is aesthetically pleasing like all the new models in the Samsung 2011 line-up. The Ultra Clear Panel together with its Eco-Light Sensor also provides optimal contrast even in bright rooms and the various sizes allow it to adapt itself to different room sizes. There is no ghosting and the screen remains bright and clear, even when viewed from awkward angles. Its Clear Motion Rate of 480 ensures that moving images are more fluid while the Wide Color Enhancer Plus offers extremely accurate color. Sound quality of the Full Range Speakers is actually quite good and the four HDMI inputs maximize the number of devices that you can connect to your TV. Compared to other models, a generous amount of USB ports is embedded into the unit. Three USB 2.0 ports are provided for connecting flash drives and USB-enabled devices. AnyNet+ also eliminates confusion by enabling you to control all your other Samsung equipment with just a single remote. In the Smart Hub, you can find more choices and apps than in any other TV. You can stream content from a great number of providers and browse frequently-visited sites like Facebook and Twitter. There is even a Search All feature for finding videos and other related content. Amazon Instant is not available on the Smart Hub, though. The 6400 also doesn't have built-in Wi-Fi. Instead, it uses a USB Wi-Fi dongle called the LinkStick which can be bought as an optional accessory. At this price point, it is both surprising and disappointing that accessories like 3D Active Glasses and USB Wi-Fi Dongle are not yet included in the package. However, if you want to experience Full HD 1080p and 3D technology at its finest, the Samsung 6400 is more than capable of providing that. It must be among the best in this price range. Plus, it is as beautiful as the images it delivers.

Pros: Great looks, Superior picture quality, 3D compatibility
Cons: May need firmware update, Sound could be improved, Browser has problems with accessing content

Review: As investments in AV technology go, the Sony BRAVIA KDL-HX820 series LED-LCD televisions command serious ratings. These two models (46" and 55") may only be the second-tier release from Sony, but, as they come packed with enough features to rival the current king of the hill, the HX-929s, they comes across as a competitive choice, specially with a lower price point. Sporting the same "monolithic" design aesthetic - a wide expanse of Corning Gorilla Glass covers the entire screen from end-to-end - the HX820s scores points in the looks department even when compared to other models. As an added bonus, the screen also features the new OptiContrast panel technology, which enhances the black levels in images through a combination of a clear surface treatment and a sheet of resin between the glass and the actual LCD Display. It goes without saying that awesome picture quality is the norm with Sony Bravias, and the HX820 series are no exception. The Dynamic edge LED Backlighting on this 1080p Full HD compatible TV series has local dimming for higher contrast, while the X-Reality PRO Engine optimizes every image via a thorough, per-pixel enhancement. Action movie and sports buffs will really appreciate the MotionFlow XR480 technology, as it enhances and reduces blur in fast-moving images. The sound quality on the HX820 models is sufficient for casual use, but as always, it could be improved by adding additional speakers, which are now easier since these models have a lot of HDMI ports to connect to. Sony's HX820 models have also joined the 3D bandwagon, with both screen sizes offering a solid version of this up-and-coming feature with the use of active-shutter 3D glasses. Specifically, the MotionFlow Technology works with the TV's 3D rendering to produce a more lifelike image. You can customize settings to your liking on the fly, which lessens the chances of a headache or vertigo from your eyes having problems with that particular feature. Internet connectivity is also a strong feature of the BRAVIA HX820 series, with a choice of an 802.11n wireless or a wired connection to use. The requisite apps that form the Bravia Internet Suite are well represented; you can enjoy hours of streaming content from Netflix, Hulu Plus, Qriocity, and Pandora, Social media from Facebook and Twitter, and even make video calls with Skype (requires a special accessory to be purchased though.) With all these great features, the Sony BRAVIA KDL-HX820 series LED-LCD televisions could easily be called a surefire choice for your home entertainment setup, and it definitely is, excepting a few minor issues. For example, it could do with a firmware update before use, as the software can get a bit slow and clunky. As mentioned, the sound quality can be improved with the addition of separate speakers, while the built-in browser may have problems accessing online content. Lastly, you may want to check with the vendor if the TV you are buying comes with the 3D glasses included, or if you have to buy them separately. For general purposes though, the BRAVIA KDL-HX820 series are most definitely recommended.
