TIPS
  1. The best type of air purifier is the one that combines different types of filters for maximum cleaning power.
  2. Invest in an air purifier with HEPA filters that can trap even the smallest allergens and microorganisms. Activated carbon filters, on the other hand, is effective in getting rid of unwanted odor.
  3. Avoid models that use ozone filters as they pose certain health risks.
  4. Pick the right size of air purifier according to the size of the room you are going to use it in. A handy guide to do this is to remember that a machine that pushes 100 cubic feet of air a minute is good for a 250 square foot space. Consider more compact air purifiers for bedrooms and larger ones for living rooms or wider areas.

Pros: Compact air purifier with easy-to-clean HEPA-type filter, Works alone or with separate ionizer attachment, Multi-speed
Cons: Product may get loud when switched to higher speed

Aside from the toxic elements, another health risk posed by the air we breathe is the presence of dust, smoke and organic material like pollen, spores or animal dander. For someone with a weak or particularly sensitive respiratory system, excessive inhalation of those materials may trigger a serious and potentially fatal allergic reaction, or what is commonly known as an asthma attack. One way to minimize the amount of allergens in the air is to use an air filtration system known as HEPA that traps foreign particles within its network of filter tubes. One such air filter device is the HEPAClean HHT-001 Air Purifier from Honeywell. It covers an effective indoor area of 85 square feet, or a little under 8 square meters. The compact frame makes it suitable for placement on tabletops to keep it out of the way. The HEPA-type, or High Efficiency Particulate Air filter at the heart of the purifier traps up to 99% of allergy-causing foreign materials that can be easily washed off and cleaned to save on money. In fact, regular cleaning may prolong the life of the unit. An optional ionizer attachment also increases the air-cleaning and purifying power by killing airborne bacteria or viruses, as well as removing stale or bad odors from the air. The ionizer is not recommended for asthmatic users though. A CADR rating of 55 for dust and smoke and 65 for pollen gives this purifier a marked edge in cleaning household allergens. The Honeywell HHT-001 has a soft night-light feature that illuminates the front of the unit and another light that signals when it is time to clean out the filters. It also has three fan speeds to choose from, with the rate of air cleaning dependent on the speed. Reports however indicate that it tends to become a little loud as speed goes up.

Pros: Quiet, remote controlled, 5 year warranty, easy to clean
Cons: Smaller filtration range, heavy unit,

The Quiet Care HEPA air purifier by Honeywell is one of the quietest HEPA air filters in its class. It boasts remarkable air flow capabilities and noise reduction technology without having to sacrifice power. This 3 speed air filter clears the air of airborne allergens such as dust, pollen, pet dander, tobacco smoke and other allergens The Quiet Care's pre-filter and filter systems work together to eliminate airborne particulates and the filter change indicator light takes the guess work out of filter changes. What we like about this unit is how well balanced it is. With so many features you'd expect it to have to be suffering in some crucial errors, but this is not the case. Its only flaw is its filtration range which seems disproportionate to its. But considering its sleek design, 5 year warranty and excellent customer satisfaction rating this HEPA air purifier is definitely a steal for the price

Pros: Great filtration system, long lasting filters, very quiet
Cons: Fan glitches have been reported, instructions can be unclear

The QuietFlo HEPA air purifier by Hunter is a powerful air filter that filters all the air in a room up to 6 times per hour. This 3 speed air purifier is relatively quiet and can be mounted on the wall, laid on its side or sat upright, which makes it easy to fit into just about any space. It features a carbon pre-filter that improves odor control and works with the rest of the 3M Filtrete filtration system to eliminate 99.97% of all airborne particulates including dust, pollen, tobacco smoke, pet hair, lint and other particulates as small as 0.3 microns in size. The only thing we love more than its incredible filtration system is how long the filters last. The HEPA filter for the Quietflo lasts much longer than many HEPA air filters in its class, only needing to be replaced about once a year. However, the technical support for this particular unit is less than outstanding and there have been a few fan glitches, but they're few and far between. Despite this the QuietFlo HEPA air purifier really is a great purifier for the price.

Pros: Excellent performance, whisper quiet, good filtration range
    Cons: Expensive

The FAP03RS Flitrete Ultra HEPA air purifier by 3M is a whisper quiet unit that filters 99.9% of airborne particulates including pollen, mold spores, dust mite debris, pet dander, smoke, and virus carrying particulates. Its filtration range is 360 square feet so it's great for larger rooms and its modern design allows it to blend with any décor. The Filtrete boasts one of the best filtration systems in its class and a indicator light that lets you know when it's time to change your filter, what more could you ask for in an air filtration device? We love this air filtration device's ability to merge strength and noise reduction technology. The Filtrete is the most powerful purifier in its class boasting an efficiency rating up to 13 times more effective than most other air filtration devices in its price range. This air purifier comes in two sizes with filtration ranges of 160 and 360 square feet and is much quieter than most units in its class. However there is the little matter of price. This unit costs a bit more than others in its class and there have been a few fan speed glitches reported in some units. It can also become overloaded when used in homes with multiple pets, but with it's easy to change filters and great technical support, it's a modest trade off.

Pros: Powerful filtration system, lifetime warranty, wide filtration range
    Cons: A larger unit, noisy

The A350 90-Watt HEPA air purifier is a larger air purifier by Alen. This purifier is most effective at a range of about 400 square feet but it's capable of filtering the air for a range of 800 square feet. It uses a large carbon filter so you only need to replace the filters in this unit about once every 6 months and they are fairly easy to replace. The A350 has 4 fan speeds so it can adjust to a room's needs and an ionizer that makes for cleaner air no matter what size room you have. With its powerful purification system and balanced design it's hard to find a better purifier for the price. What we like most about this particular unit is that it includes both HEPA technology and carbon odor elimination technology that can be utilized depending on the consumer's taste. It's easy to maintain and has a high customer satisfaction rate to go along with its lifetime warranty. Unfortunately, this unit is a bit larger than most so it consumes quite a bit of electricity when you run it on high for extended periods of time and it's a little on the noisy side. However, it makes up for its size with a 12 hour timer that saves you energy and the noise decreases when used at the lower fan speeds.
