TIPS
  1. Digitizing tablets provide a more intuitive way of using your computer. Graphics applications, in particular, offer support for tablets to the extent that you can draw directly into the computer without having to use pen and paper.
  2. Almost all tablets use a USB interface to connect to the computer, but a few high-end models, such as some Wacom Intuos models, offer wireless tablets for total freedom.
  3. There are also several digitizing tablets like the Wacom Cintiq series that offer touch screen capability. They can be quite expensive, though.
  4. The pen used in digitizing tablets may or may not require battery to provide energy. Pick one depending on your needs.
  • Wacom Intuos4 Medium Pen Graphics Tablet (5.5\

Pros: Ambidextrous design, Touch ring, increased sensitivity, pen with rubberized grip, pen holder with nib extractor,
Cons: Expensive, ExpressKey buttons have the same shape

Review: The Wacom Intuos4 Medium Digitizing Tablet provides fast production time for the professional designers, artists and photographers. It provides enough working space with its 48.5 square inch working area. It has a different lay-out from the other Intuos tablets. It features a Touch Ring which enables you to scroll down applications and the ExpressKey buttons are now placed in a single row on one side of the tablet with OLED that indicates the currently selected function next to each button. The Intuos4 has an ambidextrous design that enables both right-handed and left-handed persons to use the tablet with ease. There are two USB ports on the tablet to accommodate the right and left hand orientation. The control panel can be set to match the orientation. Just flip over the tablet whether you're left-handed or right-handed; the text rotates along with the flipping so the tablet is always in the correct orientation. The Intuos4 also includes a pen with 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity and a rubberized grip for greater control of your strokes. The pen holder that comes with the tablet not only holds the extra nibs but also serves as a nib extractor. Replacement nibs and a cordless mouse with five customizable buttons are also included. Pros: Large pad, Long lifespan, Compatible with Mac and PC
    Cons: Expensive

Review: The Intuos 4 Extra Large Pen Tablet by Wacom is one of the biggest tablets on the market today. It's one of the more expensive tablets in its class, but with so many features it's more than worth the price. The Intuous4 Extra Large Pen tablet has a nice weighted pen which improves sketch quality and control. It has express keys for easy access to its features and its sleek design makes it easy on the eyes, but what we like most about this tablet is the tablet's surface. While the frame is a bit on the slippery side the traction of the actual work surface is remarkable. Combine that with the sensitivity of the cordless pen and you get a real pen on paper feel. However there have been some compatibility issues reported for Windows Vista users. While it has been reported that the vista support for this tablet is poor, these reports are few and far between. The versatility of this tablet more than makes up for any compatibility issues you might encounter. This light, thin tablet is a great buy for anyone who appreciates quality in their tablets.

  • Wacom Bamboo Create Graphics Tablet (8.50\

Pros: Easy installation, Large working area, Great sensitivity, Convenient side buttons, Wireless option is available
Cons: Nibs wear down fast, Short cable, No eraser on the other end

Review: For creating your own work of art whenever inspiration strikes, the Wacom Bamboo Create, with an actual area of 8.5" x 5.4", could be a big help. You can work on projects with relative ease and maximum precision. The "Wacom" name is a good indicator of quality. The tablet can handle almost any task that you intend to throw on its way, including but not limited to photo editing and drawing. When it comes to installation, it is super easy. The Installation CD already includes the driver software, an interactive tutorial and a helpful user's manual. A Quick Start guide also comes supplied with the Bamboo create. The tablet connects to your computer through USB and works with both Windows and Mac platforms. The cable is shorter than expected, but when you're ready to cut loose, converting the tablet into a wireless tablet is possible with the use of an optional accessory kit. Plus, bundled with a Software DVD that contains Autodesk SketchBook Express, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Corel Painter Essentials and Nik Color Filters, users of all ages and abilities can really take their skills to the next level. There are extra nibs included in the box but be sure to buy spare nibs as they wear out pretty fast when used frequently. There's also no eraser on the other end of the pen. Instead, you can program one of the buttons to function as an eraser when necessary. The Wacom Bamboo Create permits right- or left-hand navigation and has an intuitive button layout. Versatile enough, it is perfect for personal or professional use, and also makes a great gift to anyone who loves to draw. Aside from having a visually-appealing design and a large working area that offers unrestricted movement, the Bamboo Create, available at a very reasonable price, gives you all the control you need in the palm of your hand.

Pros: Great size, Matte screen, Responsive, Features a built-in stand and a rubber grip pen, Lots of video inputs
Cons: Not very portable, No pen holder, Expensive

Review: Average people will find the Wacom Cintiq a little overpriced and beyond their reach, but any Wacom user will appreciate and can attest to its ability to increase efficiency. The Wacom Cintiq has three models, the 24HD, 21UX and 12WX, with the 24HD being the largest at 30.29" W x 18.26" H x 2.5" D, the 21UX being the middle ground at 22.1" W x 16.6" H x 1.9" D, and the 12WX having the smallest size at 16" W x 10.5" H x .67" D. Aside from the difference in physical size, the three members of the Cintiq family also differ in terms of pressure sensitivity. The 24HD and 21UX are much superior, boasting 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity, while the 12WX has 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity. You can place the graphics tablet in an upright position, using the built-in stand, or put it on your lap or on your desk. It is not very portable due to the number of cables and bulky adapters used in the set-up, but if you'll use it mainly on your desk, we don't see it being a concern. Although it demands a hefty premium, it would greatly benefit digital artists, illustrators, photographers or other types of professionals who are willing to invest in a worthy product that offers maximum productivity, unbeatable ease of use and a whole bunch of compelling extras. The display of the Cintiq is not very bright, presumably because of its matte finish. It doesn't attract dust or fingerprints which are common to glossy displays, though. The 24HD and 12WX features 10 user-assignable ExpressKeys and 16 for the 21UX. Lots of video inputs are also integrated into the unit, with a choice of Analog RGB and digital DVI for the smaller models and the addition of a DisplayPort for the largest. The pen that comes with each model has a rubber grip for superb handling, precision and comfort. Each also has a tip switch, 2 side switches and an eraser. The 24HD and 21UX includes 6 standard, 1 stroke and 3 felt nibs whereas the 12WX comes supplied with 3 standard, 1 stroke and 1 felt nib. You can even buy optional pens (art pen, classic and airbrush) for specific purposes. A pen holder would've been useful for keeping the pen in place and for minimizing the risk of eventually losing it, but it is still not a deal breaker by any means. In summary, the Wacom Cintiq combines everything you need in a single device. It simulates drawing on paper and all of its features are nice to have on your arsenal.
