Top Plasma TVs by Consumer Reviewers

While more costly, plasma TVs are a must-have for serious videophiles that need a larger screen and are fond of watching action movies. They can render fast moving images with no lags and the thin bezel is obviously more appealing and sleek-looking compared to the already-thin construction of most LCD or LED TVs. If you watch a lot of movies in darker rooms and want a Plasma TV that will look great from any angle, we have a list of the top Plasma televisions on the market today. From refresh rates of the televisions to how crisp and clear the picture is, there are many considerations you need to make. TIPS
  1. Get plasma TVs with screen sizes of about 40" or greater for your living rooms or TV rooms. For bedrooms, you may want to pick something smaller.
  2. Plasma Technology may consume more electricity when compared to other flat-panel display technologies.
  3. Design-wise, plasma-based displays are very thin and can easily be mounted onto walls.
  4. Choose plasma TVs with matte screens for brightly-lit rooms.

Pros: Superior picture quality, Lead-free display, Includes a swivel stand and a Wi-Fi adapter
Cons: 3D Glasses are not included, Bottom speakers make the unit slightly thicker, Glossy bezel, Clicker has no dedicated Netflix button

Review: Although more expensive and thicker than the ST30, the Panasonic GT30 is a perfect match for those who wants a grand view of their movies and other media content. It doesn't cost nearly as much as buying a high-end TV; in spite of which, it makes ghosting and low-quality video output a thing of the past. It boasts a full HD 1080p resolution and a frame rate of up to 120 frames per second. The lead and mercury-free display not only ensures dazzling picture quality, it also offers lower power consumption and a longer panel life of up to 100,000 hours. As mentioned, it is chunkier than the earlier series so those who didn't want the overall size of the ST30 would not be impressed by the GT30, as it measures 2.2 inches deep due to the addition of bottom speakers which can't be detached. The glossy bezel also makes it a bit of a dust-magnet and there are no 3D glasses included with the package so you need to shell out a bit in order to get hold of the 3D feature. On the other hand, the supplied stand is capable of swiveling, providing more flexibility than the standard ones. The Infinite Black 2 technology offers incredible contrast and deep blacks even in bright environments and the 600Hz Subfield drive enables you to view fast action scenes at full speed. 2D-3D Conversion can also be considered top notch as it produces the best possible output and plays crystal clear images. Thanks to Viera Link, you can de-clutter your desk and control all compatible devices like cameras, camcorders, Blu-Ray players and home theater system using the same remote control. The clicker doesn't have a dedicated Netflix button like other models but still, it is easy to use and comfortable in the hand. The GT30 lets you experience a wireless, convenient connection with the inclusion of a Wi-Fi dongle. It is worth mentioning that most TVs in the same price range don't usually come with one. Through Viera Connect, you can get updates from Facebook or Twitter, video call or chat with your friends on Skype and enjoy interactive and engaging content from a great number of providers including YouTube, HuluPlus, CinemaNow, Amazon Video, Netflix, NBA, MLB, NHL and NFL. The ST30 is a great TV with ample features and the same could be said about the GT30. It is neither the slimmest nor the classiest model available today but the solid picture quality and great feature set make it worth the extra money. It even has a 3D Image Viewer which enables you to insert your SD card into the dedicated slot and view your photos directly from your TV.

Pros: Slim bezel, No ghosting, Solid 2D and 3D, Good built-in speakers, Integrated Wi-Fi
Cons: No web browser and QWERTY remote, 3D glasses must be bought separately

Review: At only 1" inch thin and 1.4" inch deep, Samsung's PND7000 series is a far cry from bulky TV sets and even to the new and already-thin models of the competition. If you have been eyeing the D8000, you will love the D7000 even more as it has a thinner bezel. Add to that the titan black finish, glass edges and the sturdy rectangular swivel stand with an acrylic neck, and you get a totally fashionable piece. As for picture quality, 2D and 3D viewing are both solid, thanks to its Full HD 1080p Resolution and 600Hz Subfield Motion which provides a no-blur viewing experience. The Real Black Filter even adjusts the settings automatically based on current lighting conditions for rich color and deep black levels. No active shutter glasses are included, though. In contrast with other Plasma TVs, the sound coming from the two 10-watt Down Firing Speakers is good and in fact, better than those in similarly-priced TV sets. It really saves valuable desk space as you won't need additional speakers. The built-in Wi-Fi also means that you won't need to buy an expensive USB Wi-Fi dongle. You have direct access to a variety of Internet services like Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube and Facebook and you can make all the content you want available right on your TV screen. However, unlike newer models, it doesn't have a web browser and text input can be a little slow without the QWERTY remote. Luckily, the included remote control has a great layout and the QWERTY remote can be purchased as an optional accessory. This Plasma TV can play media stored on your flash drives through the USB slot. Four HDMI inputs and an Ethernet port is likewise present in case you want to hook-up a lot of devices to your TV and if you want to go wired, instead of wireless. The Samsung PND7000 comes in 51-inch, 59-inch and 64-inch sizes, making it a good option for those who are on the hunt for the largest plasma TV that they can afford. The slim-line design of this unit is hard to resist, plus it is well-equipped with all the standard connections and additional features that you would expect from a high-end TV set.

Pros: Great 3D, Neat features, Ultra-thin bezel, Good sound, Attractive price
Cons: Reflective screen, Fluctuating Brightness issues

Review: Buying a large, beautiful TV with a load of features comes at a price. With the Samsung PND550, however, you can keep the costs to a minimum. Samsung managed to make it affordable, despite its ultra-thin and ultra-sleek bezel and neat features. You can sit back and bask yourself in pure visual bliss with the unit's 3D HyperReal Engine which optimizes video performance and gives you the best experience possible, no matter if it's in 2D or 3D. The three members of the PND550 series (51-inch, 59-inch and 64-inch) have identical features and bring a subtle elegance to your living room or bedroom by showing off an undoubtedly attractive bezel plus an extra inch in screen size. On the contrary, because the PND550 resembles a mirror, you might want to do yourself a favor and avoid putting the TV in a room with excessive lighting to minimize screen glare. Some also reported Fluctuating Brightness issues, especially when watching movies with dark scenes. As for sound quality, the two 15-watt downfiring speakers are acceptable and fine for normal users but may not please audiophiles. This may be a minor issue though as the option to connect the TV to a speaker system is present and before buying a TV this size, you'd probably consider investing on good speakers anyway. If you're watching 2D content, you can transform it into 3D via the PND550's 3D Converter. A 1920 x 1080 Resolution together with Cinema Smooth delivers theater-like performance and the 600 Hz Subfield motion is well suited for viewing fast action. Anynet+ also allows you to control all your devices with just one remote and tuck away unneeded clickers to gain some usable space. In terms of connections, the PND550 is equipped with 2 Component inputs (Y / Pb / Pr), 1 Composite In (AV), a Digital Audio Output on the side, a PC Audio Input (Mini Jack), a PC Input (D-sub), an Ethernet port and lastly, 2 HDMI and 2 USB ports. Being competitively priced and having a design that's surely hard to resist as well as a great amount of features, the Samsung PND550 is definitely a beast, not only because of its size, and can easily be considered one of the better and sharp-looking TVs at this price point.

Pros: Smooth 3D rendering, Larger viewing area, Built-in Wi-Fi, Touch of Color design
Cons: Issues of buzzing noise and brightness pops

Review: With 3D and internet capability rapidly becoming standard features in newer TV models, having a large screen, perhaps 50" or larger, may be required for total enjoyment. At 51 and 59 inches, Samsung's D6500 series could be the perfect centerpiece for your home theater setup. The bigger the screen, the bigger the difference, of course. A larger viewing area than competing models, an inch larger to be exact, makes it one of your best choices. No extra weight, height or thickness is added to the unit. It still has the normal dimensions of a 51" or a 59" TV. We all know that having a TV that is great in terms of both performance and aesthetics is a hit-and-miss affair. With the D6500 series, you don't have to choose whether you want a better-looking or a better-performing TV. This particular model is a top notch performer and the touch of color design steers away from the boring look of most TVs. Some tweaks to the design are made, flaunting a clear stem that matches the TV's clear edges. Unfortunately, the Samsung D6500 is not free from flaws. In fact, reviews about the TV are somewhat mixed. Some have experienced buzzing noise and brightness pops issues which are typical of Samsung's 2011 line-up, while others did not. Feature-wise, the D6500 is quite loaded. A Smart Hub, A Search All feature and various Samsung Apps not only allow you to stream content but also lets you explore and get the most out of your TV without the need for an additional adapter. Catch the action in Full 1080p HD and 3D. 2D movies can even be converted into 3D, courtesy of the unit's 3D Converter. Lastly, as with any Samsung TV, you can view movies from your USB drives or HDDs via ConnectShare or share your photos or music to everyone in the room by connecting compatible devices to your TV.

Pros: FULL HD 3D, Realistic colors and deep black levels, Backlit remote with help key, Thin bezel with transparent edges
Cons: Few HDMI inputs, No 3D glasses included, No THX mode, Glossy remote

Review: For the grandest display, a large TV that features FULL HD 3D and faithful color reproduction, just like Panasonic's ST50 series, is a must. The TV ranges from 50-65 inch, and is beautiful inside and out, with great picture and a thin bezel, accented with transparent, angled edges. Take your mind to places of pure imagination and stunning depth with the ST50's active 3D technology. Deeper blacks are achieved through Infinite Black Pro and the 2,500 Focused Field Drive offers ultimate sharpness when viewing high speed-action. Eight dome-type microspeakers and a slim subwoofer also produce balanced sound. The ST50 can be manipulated via VIERA's remote App. Support for gamepad operation and VieraLink are also provided. A backlit remote with a help key that acts as an on-screen user manual guides you every step of the way and provides a traditional way to control your TV at a great distance. Fingerprints show up easily on its glossy surface, though. There is noticeable glare too, in the TV itself, during daytime viewing, and it uses bluetooth-enabled 3D glasses which cost twice as high as standard 3D glasses. Two rear USB ports and an SD card slot allow your TV to turn into a complete media hub, but since 4 HDMI inputs are a standard in new TVs, it's surprising that Panasonic only included 3 in the ST50. The ST50 has a web-browser which lets you do more than just watch. You can unleash your TV's limitless potential through VIERA Connect, which opens the door to various internet services like YouTube and HuluPlus for video, Pandora and SHOUTcast radio for music, Fox sports and MLB.TV for sports, and a lot more. There's also a plan of adding disney digital books, chuggington and other kid-friendly content in the near future, so that your kids can also learn and enjoy. The TV's built-in Wi-Fi maximizes convenience while giving your whole set-up an uncluttered look. There's no THX mode available on the Panasonic ST50 series, but a game mode is featured for the benefit of hardcore gamers who expect blur-free gaming, as well as an Eco-mode which automatically controls the brightness and turns off the TV after 3 hours of inactivity or 10 minutes of no signal.
