Types

When it comes to webcams, there are three basic ways to hook them up to your computer and use them.

  • Ethernet - Some webcams use an ethernet connection to hook up to your computer. This generally offers very fast speeds, allowing for a very clear video picture.

  • USB - The newer USB 2.0 technology is going to be a lot faster. While not as fast as ethernet in all cases, it is generally going to be good enough to deliver a clear, stable video.

  • Wireless - Another, newer option is to get a webcam that works with a wireless network. You are going to need a wireless network, of course, but this makes your webcam extremely portable.

Important Features

There are many things you should look for in a webcam, but here are some of the more common features and points you are going to want to make sure you get.

  • Resolution - In general, most current webcams are going to offer either 320x240 or 640x480 pixel resolution, with the latter offering a better picture. There are webcams with better resolution available, but you are going to spend more money.

  • Compatibility - You are going to want to make sure the webcam you purchase is compatible with your operating system. Whether you run Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows XP, or even the Apple OS, you want to check to make sure the webcam you purchase is going to be compatible with your computer software. Also, make sure you have enough RAM (memory) and that you meet other hardware requirements.

  • Security - Especially important with wireless webcams, you want to make sure you get something that is going to be secure. In general, most webcams have some sort of security, but you are going to want to make sure you understand how to use it and that it is turned on.

  • Software - While you will be able to use your webcam with your favorite chatting software in most cases, you do want to make sure that it is going to be compatible. In addition, many webcams come bundles with video chat software, so this is something else to consider.

  • Motion Sensing - If you move around a lot when you chat on the computer with webcam, you are going to want to make sure you get a camera that has motion sensing built-in. This enables the camera to pan and zoom to keep your face in frame at all times.
